The Clinical Psychology Department (Psychosomatic Department) of the Shanghai Mental Health Center was established in 1988. It has gradually developed its unique psychosomatic treatment model based on the German model. This model is characterized by a systematic integrative treatment approach under open management. The department is renowned nationwide for its treatment approaches and focuses on treating functional mental health disorders that are mainly attributed to psychological factors. It provides comprehensive individualized treatments that combine psychological and biomedical treatments, such as medication and neuromodulation. The department specializes in providing individual, family, and group psychotherapy. It is recognized as a pivotal disciplinary base for developing psychosomatic medicine within the Shanghai Healthcare System, an area that has traditionally been under-resourced. It is also a major department for clinical psychology and a specialty center for both psychosomatic medicine and sleep disorder studies. Additionally, it serves as the base for the Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Treatment Center, the Eating Disorders Treatment Center, and the Sleep Medicine Center. In 2018, it was also designated as one of the first “Chinese Multidisciplinary Integrated Centers of Psychosomatic Medicine” and “Chinese Psychosomatic Medicine Education Alliance Bases” by the Psychosomatic Medicine Branch of the Chinese Medical Association.
