Shanghai Mental Health Center (SMHC) Successfully Performed the First Functional Neurosurgery Operation

On October 19th, the neurosurgical team led by Professor CHEN Liang from Huashan Hospital and functional neurosurgery team of SMHC jointly performed a DBS surgery for Xiaotian who suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in the SMHC Minhang Campus.

According to the assessment of Dr. WANG Zhen, the head of the Department of OCD, Xiaotian's obsessive symptoms were considered to have poor effects on drug, psychological and non-invasive physical therapy. Postoperative CT scan showed the electrodes were implanted accurately to the planed target.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is one of the most challenging psychiatric disorders to treat and can greatly disrupt the lives and families of those affected. Director WANG Zhen pointed out that 20%-30% of OCD patients eventually became treatment-resistant cases, making medication therapy ineffective.

DBS is a minimally invasive and adjustable neuromodulation technique. It provides new opportunities for patients' recovery and an important window for investigating the pathophysiological mechanisms of psychiatric diseases and the mysterious functions of the brain.

Regarding the success of the first neurosurgery operation at SMHC, Director WANG Zhen stated that the success was the result of the collaboration of various departments of our hospital. It also marked the great partnership of SMHC as the national center for psychiatry with Huashan Hospital as the national center for neurological disorders. This was a proactive attempt to innovate multidisciplinary treatments (MDT) for intractable psychiatric disorders. SMHC will also further cooperate with more medical institutions and high-tech enterprises to explore the application of modern neuromodulation technology in psychiatric diseases. We would proceed the treatment of intractable psychiatric disorders using brain-machine interfaces to continuously improve the effectiveness of treatment for these challenging conditions.
