On March 28, 2024, the Implementation Project To Enhance The Effectiveness Of Mental Health Services For Children And Adolescents was launched at the Shanghai Mental Health Center's Xuhui campus. The project is supported by the China Medical Board (CMB). Experts and representatives from various fields attended the kickoff meeting. The next day, the project team also organized a technical workshop to discuss implementation strategies.
The mental health problems of children and adolescents are highly concerning in Chinese society. Recent studies have shown a significant increase in the incidence of anxiety, depression disorders, and related high-risk behaviors such as self-harm or suicide, leading to the exhaustion of mental health services, education providers, and family resources. Currently, mental health services and resources urgently need to be integrated so that health, education, and community departments can meet the growing mental health needs of children. The health system, education system, and the community operate almost independently on the mental health of children and adolescents. Therefore, the project aims to strengthen collaboration between different stakeholders in psychological services for children and adolescents and establish strong multi-sectional service models crucial for providing effective, efficient, and accessible mental health services for children and adolescents.

During the kickoff meeting, experts discussed the status of mental health services for young people in China, proposed suggestions for optimizing existing services, and identified the needed support. Three key points were summarized at the end of the kickoff meeting: to ensure communication, coordination, and collaboration. It is expected that all stakeholders will cooperate, shifting from being demanders to participants and bringing new possibilities for breakthroughs.
The technical workshop the following day focused on the project's first phase, including needs assessment and program design. Participants discussed innovative solutions, such as structured manuals and the use of digital platforms for mental health education.
The kickoff meeting and technical workshop have greatly advanced the implementation project by promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and refining the project plan as the first step.
