演讲主题: “Whatis the future for psychiatry? Five hard questions”
Abstract:
What is the future for psychiatry? Inthis talk I want to ask five questions that help us think about that future –by which I mean the way in which mental disorders are to be defined, understood, treated, responded to over the next twenty years. These are, in my view, genuinely hard questions for which there are no easy answers. They raisegenuine dilemmas, and they raise empirical, raise conceptual, professional andethical issues. In some way or other, explicitly or implicitly, all thosewho work on problems of mental disorder have to find ways to address thesedilemmas. These are my five questions: Is there an epidemic ofmental disorder? Does the path to understanding mental disorder lie through thebrain? What is the role of diagnosis and diagnostic manuals? Should we seekearly identification of those at risk of future mental pathology? And, what isthe place of patient, users, survivors, consumers in the mental system, and whatshould it be? I will suggest that the future direction of psychiatrydepends on how we answer these questions.
