Mercy Hospital was opened, which was the largest and the best equipped psychiatric hospital in the Far East at that time. Mr. Bohong LU was the first president.
Mercy Hospital was taken over by Shanghai Military Control Commission and renamed as Shanghai Municipal Psychiatric Hospital. Led by the government Prof.Zonghua Su, a famous psychiatrist was hired to take charge of the medical work.
Prof. Zonghua Su was appointed president of the Shanghai Municipal Psychiatric Hospital.
It was merged with the psychiatry departments of the Shanghai First and Second Medical Colleges to form the Shanghai Psychosis Prevention and Treatment Institute. The general hospital was set up in Wanping Nan Road.
Psychiatry, an internal journal, was launched and publication was resumed in 1980.
The genetic laboratory was established, which was the earliest genetic research unit among the mental health institutions in China.

Shanghai Institute of Mental Health was established, marking a milestone that the Center has become a significant comprehensive mental health institution with a relatively complete range of medical treatment teaching, research, and prevention categories, and with comprehensive development from basic to clinical medicine.

Neuropsychiatric Imaging Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University Med-X-Mental Health Center was established; the master's degree program in psychology of Shanghai Jiao Tong University was set up; the Delegation of Serbian Congress visited SMHC.
Mental Health Center Information was officially revised as Shanghai Mental Health Center Journal; the "Global Mental Health Cooperation Center" was established; Harvard-China Fogarty Conference was held in Shanghai.
The Central Laboratory Department became the first psychiatric laboratory in China certified with ISO 15189, and the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Psychotic Disorder was officially founded; the Governor's wife of Canada visited SHMC; Meeting of the Field Studies Coordination Group International Advisory Group for the Revision of ICD-11 Mental and Behavioural Disorders was held in Shanghai; An MOU was signed with Deakin University.
