Sleep Medicine Center

The Sleep Medicine Center of the Clinical Psychology Department at Shanghai Mental Health Center was established on July 1, 2019. This center is equipped to conduct advanced sleep experiments and features 28 Category A inpatient beds (double rooms), 5 laboratory-based polysomnography (PSG) units, and 4 portable PSG units. It primarily focuses on the monitoring, diagnosis, and treatment of sleep disorders and related issues, catering to the diverse needs of both inpatient and outpatient clients. The center also supports distance learning, ward rounds, and video communication, striving to be an integrative, resource-sharing platform that combines clinical work, scientific research, and education. Its goal is to become a leading model for treating sleep issues within the mental health field in Shanghai.

The center’s environment is designed for comfort, featuring a tranquil and soothing color scheme that helps patients relax quickly. It integrates polysomnography, sleep disorder outpatient services, and inpatient treatment. Doctors provide comprehensive and systematic care to patients. During polysomnography, patient data such as brain waves, eye movements, respiration, and heart rate are transmitted to the center’s data analysis unit. Treatment plans integrate medication, mental health therapies, and neuromodulation. Personalized mental health treatments and behavioral training are provided by doctors, who also employ neuromodulation techniques like Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation when needed. Additionally, doctors help patients adjust their daily routines with timely reminders.

Among these services, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is a specialty treatment program of the center. CBT-I is the most widely used mental health treatment for insomnia globally, addressing the condition by altering patients' inappropriate behaviors and irrational thoughts. Recognized as the gold standard for insomnia treatment, it is recommended by major guidelines and can significantly improve symptoms such as difficulty falling asleep, early waking, light sleep, frequent dreaming, and poor sleep quality.

Good sleep begins with the “heart!” The Sleep Medicine Center at the Shanghai Mental Health Center’s Clinical Psychology Department is here to accompany you on your journey to better sleep.
